The Ratel 90 was a South African infantry fighting vehicle configured for fire support, distinguished by its powerful 90mm low-pressure gun mounted in a fully rotating turret. Developed during the 1970s, it was part of the versatile Ratel family—one of the world’s first wheeled IFVs designed for modern mechanized warfare. With a top speed of around 100 km/h and 6×6 all-wheel drive, the Ratel 90 combined excellent mobility with heavy-hitting firepower, making it ideal for reconnaissance and anti-armor roles. Its welded steel armor provided protection against small arms and shell splinters, while its design prioritized ease of maintenance in harsh, arid environments. Widely used during the South African Border War, the Ratel 90 proved highly effective in fast-moving, combined arms operations across Southern Africa.
