The Morane-Saulnier M.S.406 was a French fighter aircraft and the most numerous frontline fighter in the Armée de l’Air at the outbreak of World War II. Entering service in the late 1930s, it featured a sleek, low-wing monoplane design with retractable landing gear and was powered by a Hispano-Suiza 860 hp engine, reaching speeds of up to 486 km/h. Armed with a 20mm cannon firing through the propeller hub and two 7.5mm machine guns in the wings, the M.S.406 delivered respectable firepower for its time. While maneuverable and reliable, it was ultimately outclassed by faster, better-armed German fighters like the Bf 109. Nevertheless, it saw widespread action during the Battle of France and was later used by Finland, Switzerland, and Vichy forces, leaving a notable legacy in early World War II air combat.
