The Battle of Kursk, fought in July 1943, was one of the largest tank battles in history and a turning point on the Eastern Front during World War II. It saw a massive clash between German and Soviet forces around the Kursk salient, where the Germans launched Operation Citadel in an attempt to encircle Soviet troops. Over 6,000 tanks, thousands of aircraft, and millions of men fought in this epic confrontation. Despite the initial German offensive, the Soviet defenses, heavily fortified with anti-tank obstacles and deep layers of artillery, held firm. The Red Army’s successful counteroffensive led to the German retreat and marked the beginning of the Soviet advance toward Berlin. The Battle of Kursk decisively shifted the balance of power on the Eastern Front in favor of the Allies.
