The KV-1 was a World War II heavy tank. The tank is named after the Soviet People’s Commissar of Defense: Kliment E. Voroshilov. This tank gave the Germans nightmares in 1941. Direct hits from anti-tank weapons were unable to penetrate the thick armor of this tank. The 37mm anti-tank gun’s armor-piercing shells simply ricocheted off the bulky armor of the KV tank. Even direct hits from heavy artillery guns had no effect. Engineer troops had to be involved to detonate the KV-1 with high explosives. The combination of reasonable mobility, thick armor and immense firepower made it one of the best tanks in the world when the KV-1 first appeared on the battlefield against the Germans.
