The Hotchkiss H39 SA38 was a late-war variant of the French Hotchkiss H35 light tank, upgraded with a more powerful 37mm SA38 gun for improved anti-tank capability. Designed for mobility and infantry support, it featured a compact, heavily armored hull with a rounded turret, offering better protection than earlier models. Powered by a 120 hp engine, the H39 could reach speeds of up to 36 km/h, making it one of the faster French light tanks of its time. Though still outmatched by heavier German armor during the 1940 Battle of France, its improved firepower gave it a better chance in combat. After France’s fall, captured H39s were repurposed by German forces, serving in occupation roles and as second-line support vehicles.
