The Archer was a British self-propelled gun designed to provide mobile anti-tank firepower during World War II. Built on the chassis of the Valentine tank, it was armed with the powerful 17-pounder (76.2mm) anti-tank gun, capable of penetrating heavy German armor at long ranges. Uniquely, the gun was mounted facing rearward, allowing the Archer to quickly retreat after firing—a feature that suited ambush tactics. Though its unconventional layout required careful positioning, its low profile and effective firepower made it a deadly opponent on the battlefield. Used primarily by British and Commonwealth forces, the Archer played a key role in the latter stages of the war, demonstrating the effectiveness of adaptable, tank-destroying firepower.
